Recently, global fashion and lifestyle online retailer SHEIN has added new initiatives in the field of sustainable development. The SHEIN EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) Fund, dedicated to addressing global textile waste management and developing a circular economy, has officially selected the UnTours Foundation as the second recipient to fully support the recycling of textile waste.
The UnTours Foundation is a non-profit organization that uses donated funds to provide revolving loan funds to businesses worldwide that address social, economic, and environmental issues. This donation from SHEIN to the UnTours Foundation will specifically support an initiative in Cambodia to assist local artisans in using recycled textile waste for re creation. This measure is expected to provide Cambodia with new solutions in textile waste treatment and promote local sustainable development.
As early as 2022, SHEIN announced that Or Foundation would become the first recipient of the EPR Fund, with the aim of supporting its expansion of business activities to benefit the communities surrounding the Kantamanto market in Accra, Ghana. In the past year, the Or Foundation has achieved significant results, distributing funds and donating in kind to 1334 members of the Kantamanto market community through the Second Hand Solidarity Fund, and providing funding to 30 alliance organizations to address textile waste issues in Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, and Nigeria. Through Ghana's textile innovation, over 35 tons of clothing waste have been repurposed to produce home and clothing products, and over 130 tons of textile and other plastic waste have been successfully removed from Accra Beach.
In addition to exploring textile waste recycling and innovation with partners through the EPR fund, SHEIN's recently launched "SHEIN X Rescued" clothing series is also attracting attention. This series purchases excess fabrics from the industry and produces them in a sustainable manner to achieve the reuse and creation of fabrics. And, this series of clothing must meet the requirements of the SHEIN sustainable clothing standard evolutionSHEIN by Design, including clothing fabrics containing at least 30% recycled and selected materials, the production party obtaining responsible procurement management verification, following a flexible supply chain model of on-demand production, and finally being packaged with recycled plastics and other materials for shipment and transportation. According to the assessment of sustainable fashion company Queen of Raw, SHEIN has reused 19927 meters of high-quality industry surplus fabric for reproduction in 2023, saving over 150000 cubic meters of water consumption, reducing 3051 kilograms of chemical waste, and 28.94 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions.
SHEIN has always relied on its innovative on-demand production flexible supply chain model, utilizing digital tools to analyze and track fashion trends in real-time, predict sales and control production based on actual market demand, effectively reduce inventory and waste, form cost-effectiveness advantages, and promote the transformation and upgrading of the traditional textile industry. At the same time, SHEIN is promoting sustainable strategies throughout the entire product lifecycle and process, integrating green development concepts into all aspects of production and operation, from the use of environmentally friendly raw materials to research and development, production, manufacturing, logistics, and distribution. We are committed to achieving a comprehensive and sustainable vision by 2050.
With the acceleration of the green transformation of the fashion industry, SHEIN's series of measures not only open up new paths for its own development, but also provide positive demonstrations for the entire fashion industry to move towards a more green and sustainable future.
