On the noon of March 28th local time, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, causing significant casualties and property damage. As of the 29th, according to the information group of the Myanmar National Management Committee, 694 people have died and 1670 people have been injured in the Mandalay region, and the national death toll has reached 1002, with 2376 injured and 30 missing. The number of casualties may continue to rise.
Multiple areas were affected by the disaster, with severe damage to infrastructure
This earthquake has caused severe damage to multiple regions including Mandalay, Sagaing, and Naypyidaw. Mandalay, as the second largest city in Myanmar, has been particularly affected by the disaster, with many buildings collapsing. Mr. Jiang, an overseas Chinese living in Mandalay, said that although his house has good quality, it was severely damaged due to its proximity to the epicenter and strong earthquake sensation. In addition, the Ava Bridge in Myanmar was severely damaged, and the runway of Mandalay International Airport was also damaged, resulting in the cancellation of all flights between Naypyidaw and Mandalay provinces. The control tower of Naypyidaw Airport was severely damaged in the earthquake, and all personnel on duty at the tower died.
The earthquake has affected neighboring countries, and all parties are actively responding
The impact of the strong earthquake in Myanmar extends beyond national borders, with obvious tremors felt in neighboring countries such as Thailand and Vietnam. The earthquake was strongly felt in Bangkok and surrounding areas of Thailand, and the northern, northeastern, central, and southern regions were also not spared. Chiang Mai experienced a power outage and traffic light signals were interrupted. Thai Prime Minister Petantan quickly interrupted the meeting, urgently discussed response measures, and declared a state of emergency in Bangkok, opening all parks in the city for temporary shelter for the public. In Vietnam, furniture, chandeliers, and fish tanks in some high-rise apartments in the capital Hanoi shook. In the southern city of Ho Chi Minh City, due to its flat terrain and numerous high-rise buildings, the tremors were strong and many residents went downstairs to seek refuge.
At the same time, some areas in Yunnan, China have also been affected. Strong tremors were felt in Dehong, Lincang, Baoshan, Xishuangbanna, Lijiang, Dali and other places, as well as in Chuxiong, Kunming and other places. 1705 people from 458 households in Ruili City were affected by the disaster, with 2 people suffering minor injuries. Some houses had falling objects, and high-rise buildings and old houses in urban and rural areas were partially damaged. At present, the water and electricity, transportation, and communication in Ruili City have gradually returned to normal.
International community responds, rescue forces gather
Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing has called on the international community to provide assistance and support to Myanmar, and the Myanmar government has also called on the public to donate blood and medical supplies to treat injured victims. The United Nations responded quickly, with Secretary General Guterres issuing a statement expressing condolences to the government and people of Myanmar, and mobilizing efforts to provide assistance to the affected population. The United Nations has initially allocated $5 million from the Emergency Relief Fund to support rescue operations.
China extended a helping hand at the first time, demonstrating its great power responsibility. On the morning of March 29th, at the request of the Myanmar government, the Ministry of Emergency Management dispatched a Chinese rescue team consisting of 82 members, carrying rescue equipment and supplies, to depart from the capital airport by Air China charter flight and fly to the disaster area. On the same morning, a rescue medical team of 37 people from Yunnan, China, carrying full function life detectors, earthquake warning systems and other emergency rescue supplies, arrived at Yangon International Airport in Myanmar and immediately rushed to the rescue site to carry out work. In addition, at 9:30, 16 members of the China Blue Sky Rescue Yunnan team departed from Ruili Port in Yunnan and went to Muse City in Myanmar for rescue operations. At the same time, the Chinese government has decided to provide 100 million yuan in emergency humanitarian earthquake relief assistance to Myanmar, and will provide urgently needed supplies such as tents, blankets, and first aid kits to the disaster stricken areas.
In addition to China, countries such as Malaysia and Singapore have also expressed their willingness to provide assistance. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his willingness to provide humanitarian assistance, and the Singapore Civil Defense Force is prepared to dispatch a "Lionheart" rescue team. The Singapore Red Cross has promised to provide SGD 150000 (approximately USD 110000) in relief funds.
At present, rescue operations are being carried out in a tense and orderly manner, and statistical data on casualties and economic losses in the affected areas are still being continuously updated.
