According to reports from multiple foreign media outlets including The Guardian, The New York Post, and Fox News, on March 27th local time, Elon Musk, the leader of the US Department of Efficiency (DOGE), led a team of seven members to give a rare interview to Fox News. In the interview, Musk and others not only defended DOGE's work, but also publicly admitted for the first time that they had "made mistakes" in the process of cutting government spending.
In the interview, Musk downplayed the number of layoffs in the government's large-scale layoffs, stating that the laid-off personnel only account for a small portion of the total government workforce, and most of them are voluntary resignations, with "almost no one being laid off". However, according to US media data, since the establishment of DOGE at the end of January this year, more than 30000 federal employees have been laid off, and about 75000 federal employees have accepted the "buyout and resignation plan". Over 100000 federal employees have left their positions, accounting for 4.5% of the total number of federal employees, while the White House has set a layoff target of 5% to 10%.
At the same time, Musk also candidly stated that he and the DOGE team made mistakes in cutting expenses and will proceed with caution in the future. I do agree that we should be cautious and think twice when cutting expenses, but that doesn't mean we won't make mistakes. When we make mistakes, we will quickly correct them and move forward
At the time of the broadcast of this interview, DOGE's layoffs have sparked strong opposition in many parts of the United States. The phenomenon of "post layoff recalls" has frequently occurred, with multiple federal agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Science Foundation attempting to recall employees after firing them. Faced with the chaos caused by layoffs, US President Trump's attitude has changed. On March 6th, Trump clearly restricted Musk's power boundaries during a White House meeting, emphasizing that DOGE can only provide advice to various departments and cannot unilaterally decide personnel arrangements and policy-making. After the meeting, Trump also posted on social media, stating that layoffs should be as precise as using a "surgical knife" rather than a "big axe" style rough approach. Musk attended the meeting and forwarded Trump's post, calling it a 'productive meeting'.
In an interview, Musk described DOGE's actions as "a revolution" that will ultimately make America better and have "a bright future". He pointed out that the current efficiency of the US government is low, with a lot of waste and fraud, and DOGE hopes to reduce expenses by eliminating waste and fraud. According to Fox News Network, DOGE  According to website data, the agency claims to have saved Americans as much as 130 billion dollars, equivalent to 807.45 dollars per taxpayer.
DOGE member Steve Davis used the example of a federal credit card to explain team work. He stated that the federal government has provided approximately 4.6 million credit cards to around 2.3 to 2.4 million employees, and the DOGE team is verifying whether it is necessary to issue so many credit cards. Musk also believes that the number of credit cards should not exceed the number of employees. In addition, some DOGE members also shared their previous experiences as technology executives, stating that they can introduce the ideas and experiences of Silicon Valley and private enterprises into the government.
However, DOGE and its members also face many doubts. Some members are subject to public and media scrutiny due to their young qualifications and lack of government experience, with the youngest member being only 19 years old. Meanwhile, according to The Guardian, DOGE  Currently facing nearly 20 lawsuits, accusing Musk and his team of acting without legal authorization and violating privacy and transparency laws.
