On October 13th, the highly anticipated "2018 International Smile Charity Action" officially kicked off at the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital in Fengkai County, Zhaoqing City, Guangdong Province. The significance of this public welfare activity is extraordinary. It will provide valuable opportunities for free treatment and surgery for 182 impoverished cleft lip and palate children in provinces and regions such as Guangdong, Yunnan, Guangxi, Jiangxi, and Hunan, helping them start a new life.
It is worth mentioning that this is already the 12th time that the "International Smile Charity Action" has entered the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital in Fengkai County. In the past 11 years, the "Smiling Tomorrow" public welfare team and its volunteers have always adhered to their original intention and continued to bring hope to impoverished cleft lip and palate patients in the local and surrounding areas. As of now, over 1211 patients have regained their smiles with their help. And this time, 182 patients with high expectations have registered to participate and will soon undergo screening and surgical treatment.
This public welfare action has gathered the power of love from all over the world. More than 60 domestic and international medical and non-medical volunteers have responded to the call, coming from the United States, Singapore, the Philippines, as well as Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Gansu, Handan and other places in China. These volunteers, with professional medical skills and selfless dedication, will provide free treatment and surgery for impoverished cleft lip and palate children from provinces and regions such as Fengkai, Xinyi, Dianbai, Huaiji, Lianshan, Huazhou, Shanwei, as well as Yunnan, Guangxi, Jiangxi, Hunan, etc.
Liang Shulu, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Fengkai County and President of Tang Guohua Hospital, pointed out that cleft lip and palate brings many challenges to children's lives, causing varying degrees of difficulties in eating, speaking, learning, and other aspects. In some remote and underdeveloped mountainous areas, due to insufficient public awareness of patients with facial deformities and limited family economic conditions, many children with cleft lip and palate cannot receive timely and effective treatment. They can only silently endure the pain and inferiority caused by physical deformities for a long time, and the entire family is shrouded in the shadow of misfortune as a result. However, it is gratifying that cleft lip and palate are not incurable. Through a short 45 minute orthopedic surgery, the condition of the child can be significantly improved. Normally, depending on the specific condition of each patient, 2 to 3 surgeries are required, and severe cases may require 4 surgeries, with each surgery costing approximately 5000 yuan.
The continuous implementation of the "International Smile Charity Action" is like a warm sunshine, illuminating the path forward for impoverished children with cleft lip and palate and their families. Let us hope that these children can soon get rid of their illness and bloom with confident smiles.
