Recently, a large Japanese fast food chain brand, Shiqijia, has been embroiled in a food safety scandal. Due to the discovery of foreign objects such as mice and cockroaches in its meals, the brand has decided to shut down about 1970 stores across Japan from 9:00 am on March 31 to 9:00 am on April 4, and carry out a four-day rectification. ​
According to the Asahi Shimbun in Japan, on March 28th, a customer called to complain that some cockroach carcasses were found in takeaway food from their Tokyo store. After the incident, the store involved immediately apologized to the customer and processed a refund. At the same time, it voluntarily closed down on the afternoon of the 28th. ​
Prior to this, on January 21st of this year, a restaurant in Tottori Prefecture, Japan, had a situation where customers found rat bodies in miso soup. Shiqijia did not publicly release an apology statement until March. The investigation found that rats were suspected to have mixed into the bowl while preparing miso soup in the kitchen, and the store staff did not notice in a timely manner, resulting in the problematic food being served on the table. Although the involved stores subsequently shut down for rectification and strengthened employee hygiene management training, they only responded after two months, triggering criticism from Japanese netizens on social media. Many people accused the food company of being slow to respond, and some netizens questioned whether almost all stores had hygiene problems, "just whether they would be discovered". ​
On March 29th, the official of Shiqijia announced that in view of the continuous occurrence of such food safety incidents, they have decided to implement a large-scale shutdown and rectification action. During the period of closure, each store will carry out a comprehensive disinfection and sterilization work, and the company will also further investigate the specific reasons for foreign matters mixed in the food, and strive to solve the root causes of food safety hazards. ​
As a well-known fast food chain brand in Japan, Shiqijia mainly offers meals such as beef rice and Japanese curry rice. It has nearly 2000 stores in Japan and about 650 stores in Asia and South America. The large-scale closure and rectification not only dealt a serious blow to the reputation of the Shiqijia brand, but also aroused high attention from Japanese society to food safety issues in the catering industry. ​
It remains to be seen whether Shiqijia can effectively improve its food safety management system and regain consumer trust in the future.
