On the morning of March 31st, through drone footage, we saw some residents in Mandalay, Myanmar seeking refuge on a lawn after the earthquake. The 7.9-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar has caused serious damage to Mandalay, and many aspects of the situation are worrying.
According to a report from the Myanmar National Management Committee at around 2pm local time on the 30th, the strong earthquake has caused about 1700 deaths, about 3400 injuries, and about 300 missing people nationwide. The epicenter is located near Mandalay, the second largest city in Myanmar, which has become one of the most severely affected areas. Infrastructure and living conditions
The earthquake caused the power and Internet in Mandalay to be cut off, and the mobile phone signal was poor. Only some companies' mobile phone cards had signals, and many areas were cut off from water and electricity. Due to the lack of shelters, a large number of disaster victims set up tents and mattresses on the streets or squares. The current highest temperature in Mandalay is about 40 degrees Celsius. Mosquitoes breed in the high temperature, sewage flows through the streets, and hospitals are paralyzed. There is a risk of epidemic outbreaks in the severely affected areas.
Mr. Liu, a Chinese businessman engaged in mining development business in Mandalay, said that the earthquake caused cracks in the walls of a large number of residential houses in Grau Town and shattered window glass. The local path leading to Mandalay was still passable, but the hotel in Mandalay was damaged and could no longer be inhabited.
Rescue and reconstruction work
The local Red Cross has dispatched a rescue team to Mandalay. Hu Yun, the head of a Chinese funded enterprise, successfully organized the safe evacuation of more than 70 employees from two companies based on earthquake prevention knowledge, without causing any personnel to be trapped or injured. Currently, he is organizing employees to clean up the factory building. However, rescue forces and material support still face severe challenges, and some government personnel and disaster victims are spontaneously organizing rescue efforts.
Myanmar leader Myint Aung Hlaing has issued a request for assistance to the international community, and the United Nations has announced a funding of $5 million to launch rescue efforts. The World Health Organization is preparing to provide medical supplies to Myanmar. China, Thailand, Malaysia and other countries quickly dispatched rescue personnel and supplies to the disaster area, and the Chinese rescue team successfully rescued a pregnant woman in Mandalay.
The strong earthquake in Myanmar has caused huge trauma to Mandalay, and the subsequent rescue and reconstruction work is arduous. The assistance of the international community is crucial to help Myanmar overcome the difficulties.
