Recently, with the continuous increase in global attention to green and low-carbon development, Gulf countries have taken frequent actions in the field of clean energy, which has attracted widespread attention from the international community.
For a long time, the economies of Gulf countries have heavily relied on oil, with oil revenue accounting for a very high proportion of their finances and exports. But in recent years, driven by the dual demands of internal economic diversification and external pressure to address climate change, these countries have embarked on the path of energy transformation.
According to Qatar's Gulf Times, the Arab Petroleum Investment Corporation, jointly initiated by 10 Arab oil exporting countries, announced that it will allocate $1 billion to green energy projects in the Middle East and North Africa region over the next two years, and will also introduce green and sustainable bonds to support the sustainable development of the energy industry.
In terms of specific actions, Gulf countries have achieved remarkable results. The United Arab Emirates' 2050 Energy Strategy Plan has clear goals to significantly increase the proportion of low-carbon energy, significantly reduce the carbon footprint in the power sector, and actively layout in the field of solar power generation. Saudi Arabia's "Vision 2030" is committed to economic diversification, with plans to invest heavily in renewable energy projects and steadily advance large-scale solar power plants. Qatar is vigorously building electric vehicle charging stations in accordance with the "2030 National Vision". The Qaboos solar power plant project in Oman has been launched, and Bahrain is actively promoting photovoltaic installation projects.
In addition, Gulf countries have enormous potential for hydrogen energy development. The United Arab Emirates exports blue hydrogen to Japan, Saudi Arabia plans a huge green hydrogen project, and Oman establishes the "National Hydrogen Alliance".
The International Energy Agency's analysis report shows that the accelerated development of clean energy in Gulf countries can reduce approximately 136 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions in the coming years. According to an article in the Saudi Economic News, if these new energy plans are implemented, they will optimize the economic structure of Gulf countries and reduce carbon emissions. UAE Gulf Economic Affairs Expert Muasumi pointed out that Gulf countries have significant advantages in developing hydrogen energy. PwC's Global Energy Head, Van Hoof, emphasized that the next 10 years are crucial for the development of hydrogen projects, which will affect the growth of hydrogen supply after 2030. The active exploration of clean energy by Gulf countries is injecting strong momentum into the global energy transition.
