"China is an indispensable force in the global green transformation and an active promoter of the development of renewable energy." Recently, Eric Solheim, Vice President of the the Belt and Road International Alliance for Green Development and former Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, spoke highly of China's important role in the global green transformation when attending the seminar on "Opportunities and Challenges for Europe China Cooperation" held by the Swedish the Belt and Road Institute.
Regarding the so-called "overcapacity" issue hyped up by some American politicians and media, Solheim clearly pointed out that "green transformation is needed by the world, and China is leading this transformation." He emphasized that some Western countries expect China to slow down its pace in green transformation, which not only contradicts the interests of most countries, but also violates basic economic principles.
The data strongly proves China's leading position in the field of renewable energy. China's renewable energy installed capacity is globally leading, supplying 50% of the world's wind power and 80% of its photovoltaic equipment. In 2023, China's automobile production and sales reached 30.161 million and 30.094 million respectively, a year-on-year increase of 11.6% and 12%, with both annual and sales reaching historic highs.
Solheim believes that from the perspective of promoting global green development, "the joint construction of the the Belt and Road initiative is particularly critical". In his eyes, the "the Belt and Road" initiative has provided many important opportunities for the world, including promoting the improvement of transportation infrastructure, sharing green technology, promoting green investment, and promoting exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations.
Salheim also said that when reviewing the development opportunities brought about by the the Belt and Road initiative, the United States should respond with mutual respect and cooperation. For example, China has strong capabilities in infrastructure construction, while the United States has advantages in certain high-tech fields, and both sides are fully capable of achieving win-win cooperation. In fact, some European countries have reaped tangible benefits through the joint construction of the "the Belt and Road". The port of Piraeus in Greece and the Hungarian Cypriot railway under construction are good examples.
China is a crucial partner in addressing global challenges such as climate change. Solheim emphasized that in the face of differences and contradictions, different countries should resolve them through dialogue and consultation on the basis of mutual respect.
