In the Serbian town of Kostorac on the banks of the Danube River, towering high-voltage power towers witness the changes in local energy development. One of the largest power plants in Serbia, the Kostorac power plant, has been playing an important role in supplying electricity and heating to surrounding cities and the entire country for decades. Recently, the Kostorac Power Station Phase II project, constructed by China Machinery Engineering Co., Ltd., was officially handed over to Serbia, injecting strong impetus into Serbia's energy green transformation.
The Kostorac Power Station Phase II project has introduced a 350 MW supercritical unit produced in China, which is Serbia's first large-scale power generation facility built in many years. It not only significantly improves power generation efficiency, but also performs well in environmental protection. After the project is put into operation, the total installed capacity of the power station accounts for more than 16% of the country's total, effectively meeting the growing electricity demand of the people.
Green environmental protection is given top priority in project construction. Engineer Nicholas from the project department introduced that the Chinese side has equipped advanced desulfurization and dust removal devices during the construction process, and all emission indicators are superior to EU standards. The remaining waste ash from power generation can be solidified and processed into concrete raw materials for sale, reducing dust and increasing power plant revenue.
During the project construction process, green and environmental protection is the most important aspect, "said Jiang Yushan, Deputy Manager of the Kostorac Power Station Phase II Project Department." Many Chinese technical equipment have been implemented and recognized in Europe through this project, which is of great significance for energy infrastructure cooperation between China and Europe.
Inside the power station, there is a touching story behind a specially circled open space. According to Konana Stalcevich, a fire engineer from the project department, a Roman era building site dating back over 1700 years was discovered during the construction of the underground pipeline network in 2022. The project department immediately stopped construction, redesigned the pipeline to bypass the site, and cooperated with the local cultural relics department to excavate for several months, allowing the site to be seen again. Stalchevich stated that the project department will continue to cooperate with the local government to do a good job in site protection.
As a key cooperation project in the energy field of the joint construction of the "the Belt and Road" between China and Serbia, the Kostolac Power Station Phase II Project has been highly valued by both countries. Serbian President Vucic stated that the operation of the new unit will greatly strengthen Serbia's power system. Dubravka Jedovic Handanovic, Minister of Mines and Energy of Serbia, believes that the formal transfer of the project fully demonstrates the significant achievements of Serbia China energy cooperation.
China and Serbia are working hand in hand in energy cooperation and cultural protection, and the Kostorac Power Station Phase II project has become another example of friendly cooperation between the two countries.
