On February 18th local time, the Texas Department of Health Services announced that the recent outbreak of measles in the southern plains of the state has continued to spread, and the number of confirmed cases has risen to 58. All confirmed patients have experienced symptoms in the past three weeks, with 13 of them being seriously ill and have been sent to the hospital for treatment.
Among these 58 confirmed cases, minors account for a considerable proportion. Specifically, there were 33 cases in the age group of 5 to 17 years old, and 15 cases in children under 4 years old. The reported data also shows that among the confirmed patients, only 4 have previously received the measles vaccine, while the rest of the patients have either not received the vaccine or their vaccination status is currently unclear. It is worth noting that out of these 58 confirmed cases, 45 are concentrated in Gaines County. Given the highly contagious nature of the measles virus, public health experts predict that there is a high likelihood of more cases of infection in Gaines County and its surrounding areas.
The Texas Department of Health Services has explicitly stated that the most effective way to prevent measles is to receive two doses of the measles mumps rubella triple vaccine, also known as the MMR vaccine. In order to control the further spread of the epidemic, the affected areas have started providing free vaccination services to the public. Local health officials stated that the measles outbreak in Texas is the most severe in nearly 30 years, and the situation of prevention and control is severe.
In addition, according to the New Mexico Department of Health, there have been 8 cases of measles infection in the state so far. However, as of now, it is still uncertain whether there is a history of direct contact between these infected cases and those in Texas.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease, mainly transmitted through direct contact with infectious droplets containing the virus. Usually, within one to two weeks after exposure to the virus, patients will experience a series of symptoms such as high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, tears, etc. For patients with severe illness, measles may also cause serious complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, blindness, and even endanger life.
