On March 10th, the Dutch government announced that after successful poultry trials, the Netherlands has officially launched a pilot vaccination program for avian influenza vaccines, which will continue until early 2027.
The Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality announced in a statement on the same day that the pilot vaccination will follow a "gradual" principle, selecting one farm to receive the avian influenza vaccine first, and then expanding to more farms.
The announcement states that during the pilot vaccination period, the eggs produced by these farms will only be sold within the Netherlands, ensuring that the export of Dutch eggs is not affected and monitoring the market's response to the avian influenza vaccine.
The announcement stated that the Dutch government hopes to promote large-scale vaccination of poultry with avian influenza vaccine through pilot vaccination, helping farmers better prevent avian influenza outbreaks and increasing international market acceptance of avian influenza vaccines.
As a major exporter of poultry products in Europe, the Netherlands has over 2000 poultry and egg farms, with an annual net export of over 6 billion eggs. However, since 2021, there have been outbreaks of avian influenza in hundreds of farms, with authorities culling over 7 million poultry.
In September 2023, the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality organized a trial to vaccinate a total of 1800 one day old chicks from two farms with two types of avian influenza vaccines. The results showed that after 8 weeks of vaccination, the two vaccines could effectively resist avian influenza virus infection.
In May last year, the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality announced the results of the trial, stating that they would organize more trials to observe the effectiveness of the two vaccines throughout the egg laying period. They also planned to select an authorized avian influenza vaccine in the European market and launch a pilot vaccination of avian influenza vaccine in the Netherlands.
