India opened its first "frozen zoo" in the east of the the Himalayas, and a special "life bank" is quietly operating. According to The Times of India, the Darjeeling Zoo in West Bengal, India recently opened the country's first "frozen zoo" to preserve genetic samples of endangered animals such as red pandas and snow leopards, in order to ensure their future survival.
According to reports, the Darjeeling Zoo is actively carrying out conservation and breeding programs for Tibetan wolves, twisted horned goats, and black bears. These animals, like endangered species such as red pandas and snow leopards, are at risk of extinction due to habitat destruction and poaching. The establishment of a 'frozen zoo' is a crucial step in India's efforts to protect wildlife. When wild animals die of illness or accidental death, forest officials need to complete sample collection within the golden hour. Veterinarians must immerse tissue samples in a special preservation solution and transport them to the laboratory through cold chain, "said Debal Lei, the project administrator
The 'frozen zoo' in India is not an isolated case. As early as 1975, San Diego, USA established the world's first and currently the largest "frozen zoo", storing over 10000 genetic samples of more than 1000 species. The "Frozen Zoo Project" at San Diego Zoo aims to save some endangered species from the fate of eventual extinction. Samples were collected from 8400 animals from over 800 species, and scientists hope that these samples can be used for in vitro fertilization projects.
The frozen gene bank at San Diego Zoo in California, USA, uses liquid nitrogen to preserve genetic information of endangered species such as sperm, eggs, body tissue cells, etc. for artificial breeding. One day, this' frozen zoo 'may be used to revive extinct species and bring back extinct animals on Earth. Currently, the frozen gene bank at San Diego Zoo uses multiple stainless steel storage tanks to preserve over 10000 individual animal genetic materials from over 1000 species or subspecies. Whenever an animal listed as an endangered species dies, zoo staff carefully remove the animal's sperm, eggs, some ear or eye tissue cells, and then freeze them in liquid nitrogen.
Nowadays, scientists are racing against time to find the best way to use frozen sperm for artificial breeding before some endangered species become completely extinct. The value and significance of the "frozen zoo" as a "genetic archive" are self-evident, as it helps researchers improve their levels of artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, cloning, and stem cell technology. Barbara Durrant, a breeding physiologist at the San Diego Zoo Conservation Research Center, believes that "frozen zoos" play an important role in artificial breeding research of endangered species. The 'Frozen Zoo' previously used frozen sperm to breed endangered species such as giant pandas and green tailed pheasants, and cloned two endangered cattle species using frozen cells.
With the increasing emphasis on the protection of endangered animals in various countries, innovative measures such as "frozen zoos" continue to emerge. Are you curious about any unique projects or attempts in animal gene conservation and species protection in countries other than India and the United States?
