On March 25th local time, the governments of Ehime and Okayama prefectures in western Japan reported that the wildfires that had been burning in the two prefectures since the 23rd were still spreading, causing many schools to temporarily suspend classes and multiple buildings to be burned down.
As of the morning of the 25th, the wildfire in Ehime Prefecture continued to ravage, with a burned area of 214 hectares. Imabari City and Nishijo City have issued evacuation instructions to over 1300 households. The Disaster Management Headquarters of Imabari City stated that this is the largest forest fire in Ehime Prefecture since 1989. To control the fire, the Self Defense Force's large helicopter and the county's firefighting helicopter took turns carrying out sprinkler operations over Imabari City and Nishijo City.
The fire situation in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture is equally severe. Currently, the burned area is about 300 hectares, and 6 vacant residential buildings and warehouses have been destroyed. 11 helicopters and 55 fire trucks were deployed locally to participate in the firefighting operation. According to Kyodo News, the fire in Okayama City is stabilizing, but in some areas of Imabari, wildfires are approaching residential buildings, and the fire department is intensifying efforts to extinguish them.
On the 24th, the Central Fire Department of Imabari City stated in an interview with the Japan Broadcasting Corporation television that due to dry weather, strong winds, numerous mountain slopes, and multiple ignition points, firefighters still need several days to control the fire. Faced with the severe fire situation, the Japanese central government has set up an information liaison room at the crisis management center of the Prime Minister's residence on the 24th to collect information on the disaster situation.
This wildfire not only directly threatens the safety of people's lives and property, but also has many adverse effects on the local ecological environment, transportation operations, and other aspects. The JR Yozan Line Iyo Nishijo in Ehime Prefecture has been suspended since the first train, and some roads have also been closed due to aerial watering operations.
The progress of extinguishing the subsequent wildfires and the related aftermath of the disaster still need to be continuously monitored.
