According to the Central Accident Management Department of the Korean Forest Service on March 23, due to deteriorating weather conditions, firefighting efforts in areas such as Gyeongsangnam do and Gyeongsangbuk do still faced significant difficulties on that day.
On March 23rd, the wildfire in Shanqing County, Gyeongsangnam do, had been burning for three days. According to the Forest Department, due to the high altitude of 650-950 meters in the area where the fire occurred, and mostly mountainous terrain with many rocks, it is difficult for firefighters to enter the scene to extinguish the fire, which makes firefighting work even more difficult. In addition, due to the thick smoke caused by the wildfire, the fire department had to postpone the dispatch of firefighting helicopters to participate in the firefighting work. It was not until around 15:00 local time on the 23rd that 33 helicopters were dispatched to the fire area, joining a firefighting team consisting of more than 2200 personnel and nearly 220 firefighting vehicles. According to statistics from the Forest Department, as of 13:00 local time on the 23rd, the fire extinguishing rate in Shanqing County was 65%, and the affected area of the wildfire was 1362 hectares. More than 400 residents in nearby villages were urgently evacuated. Officials from the Mountain Forest Department stated that due to stronger strong winds in the affected areas of the wildfires on the 24th, the department will make every effort to extinguish the wildfires on the 23rd.
The wildfire in Yicheng County, Gyeongsangbuk do has been ongoing for two days until the 23rd. According to statistics from the Forestry Department, as of 13:00 local time on the 23rd, the fire extinguishing rate in Yicheng County, Gyeongsangbuk do was 51%, and the affected area of the wildfire reached 4050 hectares; The Forest Department dispatched 52 helicopters, over 450 firefighting equipment, and more than 3700 personnel to fully participate in the firefighting work. It has been confirmed that the wildfire in Yicheng County was accidentally caused by tomb sweeping crowds. Although the wildfire in Yicheng County did not cause any casualties, more than 1300 villagers from 36 nearby villages were urgently evacuated.
The wildfire that broke out in Weizhou County, Ulsan Metropolitan City, had a fire extinguishing rate of 70% at 11:00 local time on the 23rd. According to the forest department's estimation, the affected area of the wildfire was 115 hectares. As the wildfire spread and was brought under control, more than 70 nearby residents who were urgently evacuated began to gradually return home.
Due to the ongoing dry weather, the Forest and Forest Agency has issued a dry alert for most areas of South Korea. A dry alarm is issued when the effective humidity is below 35% for more than 2 consecutive days. When the effective humidity is below 25% for more than 2 consecutive days, a strong dry alarm will be issued. The Mountain Forest Agency pointed out that on the 23rd, strong winds with instantaneous wind speeds of about 55 kilometers per hour will blow in most parts of South Korea, and special attention should be paid to the occurrence of forest fires.
