On March 22nd, a federal judge in the United States ordered the "Government Efficiency Department" led by Elon Musk to suspend "unrestricted" access to massive data from the Social Security Administration, determining that such actions may violate privacy. The White House spokesman criticized the ruling, saying President Donald Trump would continue to seek all feasible legal remedies to "ensure that the will of the American people is realized".
A 'needle in a haystack' survey
Judge Ellen Lipton Holland of the Federal District Court in Maryland, USA, made a ruling on the 20th, requiring the "Government Efficiency Department" to suspend access to massive amounts of social security system data containing personal information and immediately delete any relevant information that has been obtained. Holland said in the ruling, "Eradicating possible fraud, waste, and mismanagement by the Social Security Administration is in the public interest, but it does not mean that the government can disregard the law to do so
The Social Security Administration is concerned with the interests of millions of elderly and disabled people in the United States, and a vast amount of information related to these individuals is stored in the agency's system. Holland said that the core of this case is that the Social Security Administration allowed 10 staff members of the "Government Efficiency Department" to have "unlimited" access to massive amounts of information, and the Social Security Administration's legal team also acknowledged that the "Government Efficiency Department" had permission to access a large number of records.
Several former and current employees of the Social Security Agency told Reuters that a system called Numident, which allows the Ministry of Government Efficiency to access information, is known as the "jewel in the crown" within the agency and includes personal information of citizens applying for social security. Holland determined that the "Government Efficiency Department" was actually conducting a "phishing search" at the Social Security Administration, only out of suspicion to find evidence of fraud. The Ministry of Government Efficiency launched a "needle in a haystack" search, but there was no specific information to confirm that "this needle is indeed hidden in the sea".
After taking office as president, Trump signed an executive order to form an advisory committee called the "Government Efficiency Department". The Ministry of Government Efficiency launched an investigation into at least 20 government agencies, including the Social Security Administration, in January this year, claiming that the purpose was to identify fraud, waste, and other issues in federal agencies, save expenses, and improve government agency efficiency.
Judge's ruling is' broad '
Bloomberg quoted the acting director of the Social Security Administration, Leland Dudek, as saying that Dudek believes the order to suspend individuals associated with the "Government Efficiency Department" from accessing information from the system is "broad" and may apply to all staff. He will request Holland to clarify. My anti fraud team is related to the 'Government Efficiency Department', and information technology personnel are also related to the 'Government Efficiency Department', "Dudek said." For now, I will strictly enforce the decision to suspend access to information systems for all Social Security employees... Really, I will suspend access to (information systems) and let the federal court decide how they want federal agencies to operate
The Ministry of Government Efficiency has not responded to this matter at present. White House spokesman Harrison Fields criticized Holland's ruling, saying "this is another example of the abuse of judicial power by a radical judge". Trump will continue to seek all feasible legal remedies to "ensure that the will of the American people is realized". The investigation by the Ministry of Government Efficiency focuses on the Social Security Administration, as Musk identified this agency as a breeding ground for fraud and the existence of a Ponzi scheme. Investigating this agency is crucial for government spending cuts. However, the related investigation has sparked controversy in the United States. According to Musk, millions of Americans are still using the names of the deceased to apply for social security. The Social Security Administration insists that having a large amount of deceased information in the system does not mean that these people are still receiving social security, and the system records can be traced back to the 1930s.
