The United Nations World Food Programme released a report on March 4th stating that out of over 18 million people in Somalia, approximately 3.4 million are currently facing severe food shortages. Due to multiple factors such as ongoing drought, conflict, and reduced aid funding, this number is expected to soar to 4.4 million in the coming months.
The World Food Programme predicts that by December 2025, approximately 1.7 million children under the age of five are expected to experience acute malnutrition, with 466000 children in severe acute malnutrition.
Persistent drought is one of the main reasons for food shortages in Somalia. In 2022, the Horn of Africa region where Somalia is located experienced the most severe drought in over 40 years due to a lack of precipitation, resulting in the loss of up to 43000 lives. The World Food Programme stated that it is expected that the precipitation in Somalia will remain below average from April to June this year, which will undoubtedly add insult to injury for Somalia, which relies on rainwater irrigation for agriculture.
In addition to natural disasters, Somalia has long been plagued by internal conflicts and social disorder, which not only seriously affects agricultural production but also hinders the transportation and distribution of food. Many farmers were forced to leave their homes and give up farming due to the war, resulting in a significant decrease in food production.
At the same time, the World Food Programme's aid to Somalia is also decreasing. At present, only over 800000 Somalis can receive assistance, which is a huge gap compared to the peak of 2.2 million people in 2022. The shortage of funds makes it difficult to supply sufficient relief supplies, further exacerbating the plight of the Somali people.
Faced with this severe food crisis, the international community has taken action. The Federal Government of Somalia and United Nations agencies have jointly called for timely financial support from the international community to prevent Somalia from falling into severe famine again. The humanitarian needs and response plan for Somalia in 2025 amount to 1.42 billion US dollars, but as of now, only 12.4% of the funds have been received.
Starting from April this year, the World Food Programme will provide food and cash assistance to 820000 Somali disaster victims every month. Although this number is far below the peak of 2.2 million people per month in 2024, in the current situation, every aid could become a "life-saving straw" for the Somali people.
The food crisis in Somalia is urgent, with 4.4 million lives waiting to be saved. I hope the international community can increase its assistance to help Somalia overcome its difficulties, so that the people on this land can escape hunger and regain vitality.
