According to the BBC on the 4th, the world's largest iceberg A23a, originally originating from Antarctica, has unfortunately run aground on South Georgia Island in the South Atlantic and is at risk of breaking in the future. This giant iceberg is over 300 meters tall and covers an area of 3234 square meters. It was separated from the Antarctic ice shelf as early as 1986. After more than 30 years of long drifting, it has been slowly moving northward since 2020. Last December, A23a  Caught up in an ocean vortex called the "Taylor Column" and then continuing north, the British Antarctic Survey had predicted at the time that it was likely to drift towards South Georgia Island.
South Georgia Island is an important habitat for millions of penguins and seals. Some fishermen are worried that the grounding of A23a will disrupt the daily foraging routes of penguins and seals. In addition, some people are concerned that once the ice melts and a large amount of cold freshwater flows in, the temperature and salinity of the surrounding seawater will change, which will have a significant impact on the entire ecosystem.
However, scientists have different opinions. They pointed out that icebergs contain massive amounts of nutrients, and as the ice gradually melts, it will actually promote explosive growth in the number of marine organisms. Nadine Johnston, a scientist from the British Antarctic Survey, vividly likened it to "dropping a nutrition bomb in a barren desert." Another scientist, Hugh Griffith, also stated that icebergs are actually one of the most productive ecosystems in the world, providing ample food sources for marine organisms such as blue whales.
