According to Saudi Arabia's Al Arabiya TV on the 9th, Syrian transitional president Ahmed Shara called for maintaining peace and unity within Syria, stating that the current situation in Syria is a "foreseeable challenge". ​
The report said that Shara made the above statement during a brief speech at a mosque in Damascus. He called on the public to rest assured, stating that Syria has "conditions for survival" and that Syrians can live together in this country. ​
The Syrian transitional government is currently facing the most severe security incident since the political upheaval in December last year. On the 6th, security personnel from the Syrian Ministry of Interior were attacked by armed militants loyal to the former regime in the western province of Latakia, resulting in multiple casualties among security personnel. A large number of armed forces from the transitional government subsequently rushed to Latakia and Tartus provinces to cooperate with security personnel from the Ministry of Interior to carry out large-scale security operations in multiple towns in the two provinces. The Syrian Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Interior have not released specific casualty figures caused by the conflict. ​
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, headquartered in the UK, said on the 8th that attacks and conflicts in western Syria since the 6th have resulted in 1018 deaths, including 125 Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Defense and their auxiliary armed personnel, 148 former regime armed personnel and their supporters, and 745 civilians "brutally cleared and killed in sectarian massacres". ​
On December 8th last year, the Syrian Sham Liberation Army announced the liberation of Damascus and the overthrow of the Assad regime. The Syrian Transitional Government officially took over power on the 10th of that month.
