Recently, the Straits Times of Singapore published an article on March 5th pointing out that the phenomenon of residents purchasing food from offline supermarkets, convenience stores, and online supermarkets is becoming increasingly common worldwide. However, the improvement in shopping convenience has had a negative impact on people's physical health.
A survey on the shopping habits of residents in 97 countries over the past 15 years shows that the number of supermarkets and convenience stores has significantly increased, and online shopping has become increasingly popular. From 2009 to 2023, the global chain convenience store super density increased by 23.6%. Among them, the growth rate of low - and middle-income countries is particularly prominent, with the density of chain convenience stores in Myanmar increasing by about 21% annually, Vietnam by about 18%, and Cambodia by about 12%. Meanwhile, online shopping platforms are developing rapidly, with people's spending on purchasing food online increasing by 325% in 2023 compared to 2014. The survey found that residents of the United Arab Emirates and the United States have the strongest purchasing power in online food shopping. In 2023, the per capita consumption in the UAE was $617, an increase of 570% compared to 2014; The per capita consumption of the United States was $387, an increase of 125% over 2014.
The survey also shows that in countries with more "per capita chain convenience stores", the number of unhealthy foods purchased by residents has significantly increased. From 2009 to 2023, the sales of unhealthy processed foods in some chain convenience stores increased by 10.9%, with more significant growth in Southeast Asian countries. Pakistan residents' annual purchases of unhealthy processed foods increased by 5%, India by 4%, and Bangladesh by 3%.
With the increase in the purchase of unhealthy foods, the problem of obesity has become increasingly severe. Taking Laos as an example, the per capita number of chain convenience stores in the country has increased by 15% every year since 2009, which corresponds to the doubling of the proportion of obese people in 2023 compared with 2009. In Australia, obesity has surpassed tobacco as the primary threat to residents' health.
The reason why chain convenience stores have a significant impact on residents' health is that they usually sell a large amount of excessively processed foods that are high in sugar, fat, and salt. Moreover, these supermarkets vigorously promote such products through price reductions, placing unhealthy foods in prominent locations, and television promotions, with a sales influence far exceeding that of small independent grocery stores. Meanwhile, most chain convenience stores have shortcomings in paying attention to customers' nutrition and health.
In response to this issue, the UK government has taken action by introducing regulations prohibiting businesses from placing unhealthy food in prominent positions on shelves. The article in The Straits Times calls on governments and retailers in other countries to take active action and guide residents to change their food purchasing methods to address the health challenges brought about by the expansion of convenience stores.
