According to a report by NBC on the 18th local time, the media learned after reading a Pentagon briefing and interviewing two US Department of Defense officials that the Pentagon is undergoing a major restructuring of various US military commands. One of the plans under consideration involves the United States abandoning the position of supreme commander of NATO's European allies, which has been held by Americans since Eisenhower, the former President of the United States.
According to reports, former NATO Supreme Military Commander James Stavridis said, "If the United States abandons the position of NATO's Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, Europe will see it as an important signal of leaving NATO." "This will be a huge political mistake, and once we give up, they will not return. We will lose our huge influence within NATO, and this is likely to be seen as the first step towards completely leaving NATO
NBC  It was also reported that the Pentagon briefing seen by the media showed that the United States may also halt its planned expansion of US troops in Japan, which would save approximately $1.18 billion in costs. The briefing acknowledges that this move carries political risks and may lead to a decline in the United States' command and control capabilities in areas west of the Japanese border.
According to NBC, the restructuring plan being considered by the Pentagon also includes merging the US European Command and the US Africa Command into one headquarters located in Stuttgart, Germany, as well as closing the US Southern Command in Florida to merge with the US Northern Command.
On March 6th, US President Trump stated that NATO countries have not yet paid enough fees. If NATO countries do not pay, the United States will not defend. Trump previously threatened that if the defense spending of US allies does not meet the standards, the US may "absolutely" withdraw from NATO.
